5. lost maples state natural area

Anywhere you go in this park area is going to be stunning! Lost Maples is famous for its beautiful stands of Uvalde bigtooth maples that are plentiful and lush. 

Fall is the ideal time of year to visit, so you can see these beautiful trees in their full display of multicolor brilliance. 

The colors in the changing leaves are stunning, and totally make it worth the trip. You won't even mind the scenic two hour drive as you head northwest of San Antonio.


4. barton creek greenbelt

Located just minutes from downtown Austin, this is a great area to get out and explore in the sunshine. 

There are multiple trails to choose from that will lead you to quiet secluded spots that are perfect for a picnic. 

You'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to cooling off, with pretty streams winding through the park that are easy to access and great for whiling away the afternoon alongside. During the seasons with a bit more rain, there are even deeper swimming holes you can jump in for a paddle.


3. guadalupe peak trail

If you’re looking for a challenging trail, look no further than this one. The Peak Trail is located in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. 

This hiking trail will take you to the highest peak in Texas, and while it's a challenging trek, you'll be rewarded with spectacular views at the summit.

You will be looking at about an 8.5 mile hike, so don’t forget to bring plenty of water. This hike is probably best to leave the kiddos behind for, unless they're ready to embrace their inner mountain goat! 


2. Colorado bend state park

This state park is great for hiking with the whole family. There are tons of different trails to explore, ranging in distance from about 1.9 miles to 6.4 miles, round trip. It’s easy here to find a route that's just right for your fitness level.

Explore the waterfalls, take a dip in the springs, or drop a fishing line in the river along the 35 miles of easy hiking trails at this diverse state park. 

Whatever your hiking goals for the day are, you won't be disappointed in heading to Colorado Bend.


1. 40-acre lake in brazos bend

Did you know that there are alligators in Texas? 

Hiking in Brazos Bend will allow you to see these modern-day dinosaurs in real life, as well as over 300 other different species of wildlife that live in the area. 

Located close to Houston, 40-Acre Lake is easily accessible for day trips. There are about 25 miles of trails weaving through the park, and it's family friendly... Just don’t let the kiddos get too far ahead of you, and be sure to keep at least 30 feet away from any gators you do see!
